Abstract

"Inside Maine" piece noting that one way to get an affordable art education is to volunteer as a docent a docent at the Portland Museum of Art. Docents are needed to supply visitors with general information, conduct tours, and even give gallery talks on occasion. The docents are required to complete a free thirteen-week course under the tutelage of curators, and its not uncommon for artists to visit the volunteer groups and explain their work. There are also opportunities to travel for further education through docent-sponsored travel programs.
