Abstract

Article on the wintertime appeal of the town of Kingfield in the Carrabassett Valley. Kingfield, population 1,100, is fifteen minutes from Sugarloaf/USA ski area, but hasn't experienced rapid commercial development that can spoil a ski town. Kingfield boasts a pair of fine inns, a handful of shops, and nine restaurants. Bud Dick, owner of the Herbert hotel, said Christmas is one of the peaks in the peak season. Richard Winnick, innkeeper at the Inn on Winter's Hill concurs, adding that a pair of families have been spending Christmas at the inn for years.
