Abstract

"North by East" piece about the residents of the town of Pownal, who have decided to preserve the rural nature of their town by building an modern three-story addition to back of their town hall, Mallett Hall, through fund-raising and the use of volunteer labor. Construction started this summer, using $75,000 provided by the town and another $25,000 raised through private donations, an auction, and the sale of wooden ornaments made from the remains of the building's old two-story, which will now give way to modern plumbing. The town figures that it has another $175,000 to raise before it can finish the addition.
