Abstract

"North by East" piece on the demise of snow fences in Maine. Until the recent past, road crews would erect long stretches of the wire-and-lath barriers in the belief that the fences would catch blowing snow before it reached the highways. Dick Weeks of the Maine Department of Transportation said that studies have shown the fences are not very effective. Weeks notes that some fencing is still used along stretches of road in Aroostook county or on particularly stubborn spots elsewhere, but improved snow removal equipment and better road design have replaced fences in most of Maine.
