Abstract

"North by East" piece on a bill that New Hampshire's Republican senator Jack Barnes wants to introduce. It would replace the state flag's image of the "Raleigh" with a depiction of the now-fallen Old Man of the Mountain. The Revolutionary War frigate "Raleigh" was launched at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, which is now part of Maine, and was captured two years later by the British and used against the American forces. Barnes sees no reason why it should be on the New Hampshire flag.
