Abstract

Maine Chance Farm, a beauty spa where some of the nation's famous and glamorous made their way in the 1940s and 1950s for diet and exercise at the 1,200-acre estate in Mount Vernon, was owned by Elizabeth Arden, and internationally known cosmetics queen. Guests at Maine Chance Farm included the likes of singer Judy Garland, First Lady Mamie Eisenhower, actress Ava Gardner, and author, playwright, and ambassador Clare Booth Luce.
