Abstract

"The Maine Paper Trail" piece on Maine's status as the second largest producer of paper products in the country, with details on paper production, the locations of mills, how paper is made and where it is used and sold, the high quality of Maine's conifers and paper pulp, export statistics, pay rates in the paper industry, and a glossary of paper terms. Included is a note on the "curse of the mummy," an incident in which mummies were imported from Egypt during the Civil War by a Gardiner mill, resulting in several cases of cholera at the mill.
