Abstract

An article on Idexx Laboratories Inc. of Westbrook, a cutting-edge, world-class biotechnology company specializing in test kits for veterinary and environmental diagnostics. It was founded in 1983 in Portland as Agritech and is now tops in the global market. The average age of employees is 32 or 33. As of November, there were 1,516 employees, with about 800 in Westbrook and the rest in offices and plants in Europe, Australia, East Asia, and South America. Sales in 1995 were $189 million. The first biotech company in southern Maine was Ventrex Laboratories, founded in 1976. It no longer exists, but it spun off many current companies. With a profile of Idexx founder David Shaw, 45, who believes in providing employees with a good environment and challenging work, and comments from employees. Many came to Idexx for the challenging work and for Maine's quality of life.
