Abstract

"North by East" piece on the landmark Griffin Club in South Portland's Knightville neighborhood. Bar owner Eddie Griffin raised tens of thousands of dollars for local sports teams, promoted young fighters like Joey Gamache, and organized bus trips for the families of inmates to visit Thomaston Prison. Before he died of cancer in 1993, his friends held a living wake that was attended by 900 people.
