Abstract

"The Talk of Maine" piece on the issue of logging on Maine's islands. Logging is seen as a source of income for Maine islanders as the fishing industry declines, but is sparking controversy and concern among environmentalists. Starting around the turn of the century, fields reverted to forests on most islands, and the forests have become a valuable timber resource. As island softwood stands have matured, the vigor of the trees has gone down, and trees are becoming diseased. However, the visibility of logging on an island invites criticism. Andy Arey of Warren has created a niche for himself logging the islands, and is unapologetic in his support for heavy cutting of over-aged stands of wood.
