Abstract

"North by East" piece on a recent proposal by the Fayette planning board to require local farmers to get a permit to import animal manure. Farmers threatened to block public access to more than 4,000 acres of land, and the proposal was quickly tabled.. The idea came up because of concern about the manure coming from the DeCoster egg farms in Turner. Similar newcomer-native conflicts have arisen in other Maine towns.
