Abstract

David Arnold and Bob Johnson built a four-wheeled contraption that they rode on a 126-mile, five-day journey between Brewer and Ellsworth and Calais on a century-old track that cuts through breathtaking scenery. The railroad tracks have been unused since 1984. One of the local people countered Arnold and Johnson says the "worst thing Maine ever did was take the railroad out of Down East." Other decried the congestion on Route 1 and spoke nostalgically of the train era.
