Abstract

The University of New England (UNE) overlooking the Saco River and the ocean in Biddeford, is Maine's only private university and is home to the state's only medical school and outstanding marine sciences facilities. President Sandra Featherman has helped realign and redefine the school, which 20 years ago was a former Catholic college that had adopted an osteopathic medical school. In 1996, UNE merged with the former Westbrook College in Portland, now the Westbrook College Campus. The name changes have diluted the university's identity and the two-campus structure is somewhat awkward, but UNE is working to strengthen its liberal arts disciplines and become better known nationally for its strengths in the fields of medicine and marine sciences.
