Abstract

"North by East" piece on the University of Maine at Machias' ranking by U.S. News and World Report as the fifth best comprehensive public college in the northern United States. Former UMaine-Machias president John Joseph exploited the school's location as a benefit rather than a barrier, drawing more out-of-state students for programs such as marine biology. Some 84 percent of graduates chose to stay in Maine. A plan to merge the school into a new University of Northern Maine was dropped days after the ranking was released.
