Abstract

"The Talk of Portland" piece on the Portland vs. Maine split on issues such as Green Party politics, bear-baiting, gun control, and gay rights. In the Legislature, labeling a measure a "Portland bill" might be considered the kiss of death. As an indicator of that difference, Rep. Herb Adams of Portland says he has the only district in Maine with a Buddhist temple, an Islamic mosque, and the First Unitarian Church, where the Maine Constitution was written and approved.
