Abstract

An article about Fryeburg, through which winds 20 miles of the Saco River, nearly a quarter of the river's course. The distance is only six miles as the crow flies, making Fryeburg a popular spot for canoeists, who can easily get back to their cars. Another local attraction is the annual Fryeburg Fair. The area's distinctive intervale, acres of fertile flatlands that were once a lake, heightens the town's scenic drama. Fryeburg is home to the well-respected Fryeburg Academy and attracts low-key tourism, unlike that generated by busy North Conway factory outlets across the border in New Hampshire.
