Abstract

At Acadia National Park, 230 employees and 2,500 volunteers build and maintain 149 miles of trail--including the new Sargeant East Cliffs Trail, 103 miles of roads, 215 buildings, 137 miles of drainage ditches, museums with 865,000 archeological artifacts, 60 high-end research projects, and 500 campsites. The nonprofit Friends of Acadia recruit volunteers and last year raised almost $13 million to underwrite trail work. Current projects worth over $11 million are in the works, thanks in part to the restructuring of user fees under 1997 Congressional legislation. With details on the diverse park work done by volunteers and employees.
