Abstract

Profile of Republican centrist and U.S. senator, Susan Collins of Bangor, who is working to stave off the threatened closure of both Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery and a Limestone facility and the realignment of Brunswick Naval Air Station. Some suggest the proposed closures are in part political payback from the Republican administration, a view Collins rejects. Over the past year, Collins has coauthored the Intelligence Reform Act, chaired the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, and helped negotiate a deal to save the filibuster. She credits her Maine roots for her "common-sense pragmatism." Arizona senator John McCain, who worked with her on the filibuster deal, sees Collins as "steadily increasing in stature." Four generations on her father's side served in the Maine Senate, and her father was mayor of Caribou.
