Abstract

An article on Rockport Marine, a world-renowned builder of wooden ships, owned by Taylor Allen, 56, who took the shop over from his father, Luke Allen, in the early 1980s. The yard is known for its mastery of traditional woodworking techniques and as well as for state-of-the-art modern construction techniques involving cold-molding. Allen has done away with the onsite Sail Loft Restaurant in order to expand the boatyard. He says that because of high property prices and other restrictions, he couldn't start a boatyard such as his in Rockport Harbor today.
