Abstract

Down East associate editor Michaela Cavallaro was granted unprecedented access to the Bates College admissions office in Lewiston, where staff chose from a record number of applications for the college class of 2011. The decision-making process is likened to an art, and a multitude of qualities presented by applicants are judged for themselves and against goals set by Bates, such as geographical distribution, gender, minority background, and type of school background. Bates filled 37 percent of the class with early admission candidates, and at the end of the process, accepted 27 percent of those who applied. With details on recruiting and other aspects of the admissions process.
