Abstract
Without a license, anyone can collect up to three bushels of surf (as opposed to the smaller soft-shelled) clams a day. Urquhart describes early morning, extra low-tide excursions with other clammers who prod the exposed sand with a gardening fork and gather up the clams they find. On his best days, he collected just under a bushel. With recipes.
