Abstract

Last year, the state of Maine announced a grant that will allow the Department of Conservation staff to digitize papers that Naval Commander Robert Peary kept in his Eagle Island home. The papers probably won't help resolve the controversy over whether Peary was the first person to reach the North Pole in 1908. The first man to indisputably reach the North Pole was Ralph S. Plaisted, a Minnesota insurance salesman, who did so by snowmobile in 1968. With details on the controversy and Peary's expeditions.
