Abstract

"The Talk of Maine" piece on the evolution and activities of North Maine Woods Inc. in Ashland, directed by Al Cowperthwaite. NMW exists to administer a coordinated access policy for the more than two dozen major landowners in the region, overseeing some 18 checkpoints and 500 campsites. There are those, like Rick Sylvester, owner of Seboomook Wilderness Campground, who oppose the nonprofit organization and the gate fees NMW charges for access.
