Abstract

The nine-day, July, Maine Potato Blossom Festival in Fort Fairfield features instant mashed potato wrestling, pageant contestants, and more. From 1997 to 2002 alone, 143 potato farmers in Aroostook County sold at auction, retired, or quit farming. The retail market forces growers to sell larger volumes to fewer buyers. With a look at one large potato farm in Presque Isle, Cavendish Farms Operations Inc., and at the changes occurring as residents become several generations removed from farming.
