Abstract

"The Talk of Maine" piece on Cobscook Bay, where much of eastern Washington County's economy revolves around scallops, urchins, salmon aquaculture, and periwinkles. These industries came under threat from commercial rockweed harvester, Acadian Seaplants of Nova Scotia, which began destroying habitat for periwinkles and clam spat, among other organisms. After tough emergency restrictions were passed by the legislature last spring, the harvest appears to have gone more smoothly, even though a second harvester has joined in. Details.
