Abstract

An article on Maine writer John S. Springer, whose "Forest Life and Forest Trees," published three years before Henry David Thoreau's "Walden," can be read as a companion piece to the better-known work, "reading like a dialogue between the environment and industry." Springer was knowledgeable about the lumbering industry and also had a strong appreciation for the Maine woods.
