Abstract

"The Talk of Maine" piece on the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, which during the Seattle Times Company's ten-year ownership was in a "constant retreat" and finally in a "dramatic freefall," according to longtime reporter Greg Kesich. A year ago, Bangor-born newspaperman Richard Connor purchased the newspaper, along with two other Maine dailies. Since then, he has stabilized the paper, paid down much of the chain's debt, re-engineered the Web sites, slashed jobs, sold property, and raised morale. However, rather than setting the news agenda as it once did, the Press Herald is regularly scooped by smaller papers and local TV and radio stations. Recently, the paper was scooped by the Bangor Daily News on a large march for immigration reform that took place a block from the Press Herald's office. Connor says the day of the "scoop" has passed and he is focused on customer satisfaction.
