Abstract

A brief history of Castine, leading up to the tensions between the town and the Maine Maritime Academy that erupted over the historic Abbott House. The town has lost year-round residents, has an aging population, and is struggling to improve its business climate as businesses close. The town lost a lawsuit against the academy regarding its plan to expand and turn the Abbott House into a president's house, but residents felt the decision validated the town's zoning by allowing the home to only be used as a residence. Under the academy's new leader, Bill Brennan, the academy and the town are enjoying greater cooperation and mutual support.
