Abstract

The U.S. Postal Service is contemplating the closure of 3,653 post offices across the country to help address an $8 billion deficit. Thirty-four of those post offices are located in rural locations or islands in Maine. While these post offices may not generate much revenue, residents consider them to be vital parts of their towns. Some communities have relocated postal facilities into a local store. But often in small rural communities such as the towns on the USPS list, there are no other alternatives in which to relocate postal services. A USPS spokesman stated that post offices would only be closed if an alternative location or neighboring post office is available.
