Abstract

"Newsmaker" piece features the transcript of an interview with Jim Gerritsen, an organic potato farmer in Aroostook County who is the spokesman for the Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association (OSGATA) in a lawsuit pending against Monsanto Corporation, the world's largest producer of genetically modified seeds. OSGATA farmers fear cross-contamination of their crops with the pollen from genetically engineered crops, which would render their non-GMO crops worthless in the organic market and expose them to lawsuits for patent infringement. Gerritsen discusses what the case means for farmers and also why it is important for consumers.
