Abstract

“Talk of Maine” piece about the debate surrounding the flurry of recent hotel construction projects in Portland. The four new hotels that were built in the past ten years are all doing well, despite the recession, which proponents of the four that are currently in the works cite as proof of the viability of their projects. Tim Soley of East Brown Cow Management, responsible for the Hyatt Place at the edge of the Old Port, says that downtown hotels add to a city’s vitality. Vincent Veroneau of J.B. Brown, which is building the Courtyard by Marriott on West Commercial Street, says the economic conditions are right for another hotel. Another hotel has been proposed for Thompson’s Point, along with an event center.
