Abstract

Mike St. Pierre has created a line of ultralight outdoor gear that has garnered praise from hikers and backpackers and has been lauded in publications such as Backpacker and GQ. While working as an executive chef in New York, St. Pierre went hiking on weekends and experimented with Cuben Fiber, a very light, non-woven fabric, teaching himself how to sew and creating prototypes of tents and packs. His company, Hyperlite Mountain Gear, now occupies 3,000 square feet in Biddeford’s North Dam Mill and saw its earnings increase 180 percent in 2012 over the previous year.
