Abstract

The invention of the “the peavey” revolutionized the logging industry when it was created on the fly by blacksmith Joseph Peavey as he witnessed a significant logjam during a spring log run on the Penobscot River in 1857. While Peavey’s name is not on the original patent (another blacksmith stole it from him), he and his sons did go on to improve the original design and created the Peavey Manufacturing Company, still operating today in Eddington.
