Abstract

Sunkhaze Meadow in Milford, where beavers outnumber people, is the least-known of Maine's four federal wildlife refuges. When snowfall strains the nearby Penobscot River, Sunkhaze absorbs flood waters that would otherwise overflow onto Old Town, Brewer, and Bangor. It is Maine's second-largest peat bog.
