Abstract

The beaver, brought to the verge of extinction in the last century because of the value of its pelt, is today doing extremely well in the state due to careful management. This member of the rat family, because of its tendency for dam-building, is being recognized as a key factor in the construction and maintenance of habitat for a wide range of animals.
