Abstract

Neighborhood opposition to the Portland Public Library's decision to close three branches has some city councilors requesting that the library budget be reviewed in context of the closures. The 2011 fiscal year will be the third year of flat-funding for the library. Executive Director Steve Podgajny says if the budget is reduced further, cuts will have to be made at remaining locations. Councilor John Anton said that the library needs to re-examine its assumption that the city will continue to pay 80 percent of its annual operating budget.
