Abstract

"Letters" piece addressing several issues raised in Edgar Allen Beem's recent column panning plans to move the Portland Public Library (PPL) into the former Portland Public Market building. Stephen J. Podgajny, executive director of PPL, points out that the library will actually gain approximately 7,000 square feet over the existing building if the move is approved. In addition, stacks of less frequently used items will indeed be open for browsing by the public. Finally, Podgajny asserts that though 5 Monument Square is not an old building, its age has no relationship to the evolution of a library system.
