Abstract

When Rockwell Kent arrived in 1905, Monhegan Island was still an Atlantic frontier. Today, islanders fear that it will be overwhelmed by summer travellers and rich absentee owners. The summer population has exploded to 1,200 full-timers, plus 600 day trippers a day, three times as many as in 1987. Details.
