Abstract

Since 1899, Maine schooners have been chartered for pleasure cruises. Passenger windjamming reached its peak in 1950 when the last load of pulpwood went down the Penobscot under sail and cargo sailing as a whole began to die out. More retired sailboats have come to market, and today 15 windjammers operate in mid-coast Maine. Details.
