Abstract

For islands without telephone service, CB radio and illegally patched VHF ship-to-shore radio serve as a combination communication network and entertainment medium. However, a new direct-dial system, similar to cellular telephones, is now available from Pinetree Communications in Appleton, at a cost much reduced from the $5,000 home antennas otherwise required for private service.
