Abstract

Portland's Casco Bay island communities are facing a solid waste crisis, precipitated by the replacement of dumps with landfills on Peaks and Long Islands. The Department of Environmental Protection found fault with both. Cliff Island dumps its organic garbage into the ocean and burns the rest. Great and Little Diamond Islands store their winter waste in a trailer-packer, which is filled to capacity. Details.
