Abstract

Until 1913, when the state Legislature prohibited the practice, the state of Maine generally sold its publicly owned islands at auction. In 1973, the Coastal Island Registry Law required all island owners to register their titles, and in 1976 the Bureau of Public Lands assumed responsibility for the 1300 unregistered islands.
