Abstract

Successful seal protection programs in the Gulf of Maine have raised the New England seal population to 15,000, pleasing seal watchers and aesthetes. Fishermen are concerned about the inevitable competition with seals, opportunistic feeders, for commercial fish stocks. The University of Maine is attempting to band and monitor seals to chart their ability to coexist. Details.
