Profiles of four transplanted island families on Isle Au Haut. Matthew Skolnikoff moved to Isle au Haut to get out of the city, and used his community development experience to help the island write grants, and developed the town's moderate-income housing repopulation program, aimed at diversifying the island's economy. But on Frenchboro, one transplant family, the Beotes, said the financial hardships of local fishing forced them to return to the mainland rather than go on welfare. They said Frenchboro sold them an overly optimistic vision of island life.
