Abstract

The lighthouse on Southern Island, off Tenant's harbor, was Andrew Wyeth's private retreat from the 1970s until 1990. Wyeth and his son, Jamie Wyeth, painted extensively there, and although they used the island's unique light qualities in different ways, both captured the long tradition of lighthouses in Maine art. Detailed art criticism, 21 color plates, mostly of the light station.
