Abstract

Article on the Rockland-based DOUBLE EAGLE, a classic Maine herring carrier designed to take a thousand bushels of herring from weirs and seines to market or factory. Over the course of her 72-year working life, the DOUBLE EAGLE has carried tens of millions of pounds of herring from Gloucester to Nova Scotia, and kept many of Maine's sardine and canning factories stocked. Current owner/operator Glen Lawrence restored the vessel and has been carrying fish for the canneries in Massachusetts Bay in the winters, and working a Maine island bait trade in the summers. Uncertainties in the herring fishery and the state of the coastal herring stock have Lawrence unsure of what the future holds for this purpose-built boat.
