Abstract

A look at the history of the granite industry on Vinalhaven, with details on its technology and its environmental and human impact. The island's Bodwell Granite Company was the source of eight 55-foot columns placed in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. It took 19 days for the first two columns, weighing 130 tons, to be transported two miles from a dock to the cathedral grounds.
