Abstract

Sandy Oliver describes her efforts, along with Jamie MacMillan, to improve the soil near their home on Isleboro and achieve greater self-sufficiency through gardening. Over the past 22 years, they have expanded their garden from 800 square feet to 2,000 square feet and have been able to supply vegetable for others on the island through a community-supported agriculture (CSA) model and pre-paid shares. With details about the variety of vegetables and fruits grown in their garden and sidebar on the Isleboro Central School's efforts to grow food for the students' lunches and the community.
