Abstract

Discussion of how island communities, in Maine and elsewhere, can serve as models to test innovative solutions to current pressing questions, such as how to control energy costs and how to conserve marine resources. Because islands are often small and isolated, the results of such innovation can be seen more quickly and more clearly. With examples of several models that Maine island communities have initiated, including the Fox Islands Wind project and the Calendar Islands Maine Lobster co-op.
