Abstract

Piece contrasts two different approaches to the construction and dissemination of cultural knowledge and identity. The author worked with CREST (Community for Rural Education Stewardship and Technology) as a digital ethnography trainer, teaching students in Maine how to document their everyday lives. He has also worked with young people in the island nation of Vanuatu, helping them to produce videos documenting their experiences as youth. He compares this to another filmmaking project that took place on Vanuatu: the shooting of the reality television series, "Survivor."
